Raymond Dokpesi Supposedly Arrested by UK Police in London
According to information obtained by THISDAY yesterday, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, the founder of DAAR Communications Limited, has allegedly been detained by British police. The former Chairman of DAAR Communications was detained at Heathrow Airport in London, according to a source who confirmed the situation. As of the time of publication, the media mogul's arrest's circumstances were unknown. Dokpesi and his company were charged in 2015 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria with illegally collecting money from Colonel Sambo Dasuki, a former National Security Advisor (NSA), that was deemed to be the proceeds of crime. He entered a not guilty plea to the allegations, and after the prosecution rested its case in November 2018 after presenting 14 witnesses, he went one step further and submitted a no-case submission. Justice John Tsoho, the trial judge, rejected the no-case statement and ordered Dokpesi and his company to present their defence. Unhappy with the verdict, the defendants went to the Court of Appeal with a request to overturn it and exonerate him of all charges on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to make a prima facie case.
